Cognitive flexibility, attention control, working memory...

What do these things mean to you?

These are what our children need for success in school and in life. We call them "Executive Function" skills. We're all born with the potential to develop them, and the process begins in infancy! Through solid relationships with the important adults in their lives, babies and children learn to trust, and that's where all learning starts.

Why Music?

(Meet Bowman, Everybody! We'll find out more about Bowman and his musical family in next week's newsletter!)

In a Music Together class you and your child experience a closeness and bonding while you sing, dance and play with others in this unique community. Trust is built through fun and silly activities, but these activities are chosen with a purpose.

Last week we played with the Beehive chant. It helped the children hold their attention and wait for the big tickle at the end. In addition to attention control, it is an example of inhibitory control. Other chants like "Jack-in-the-Box" illustrate the inhibitory response even more clearly. As "Jack" waits in his little dark house, you ask, "Will you come out?" The large pause and deep breath before answering, "Yes, I will!" causes everyone to hold their breath and wait for the resolution. This is an essential life skill. Without the ability to inhibit inappropriate responses and impulses, success in school or work is negatively impacted.

This week look out for fireworks! It will challenge them to hold their attention and wait for the big boom at the end!

Have you gotten the app so you can listen to your music? It's easy! First go to your app store (Google play or ITunes), and get the Music Together app. Next find the download code on the inside front cover of your songbook. Finally, create an account in the app, (not the same code as your MTwG account) and enter your songbook code. Voila!

Reach out if it's not working for you.

This week bring in your seashells!

Did you know about the lovely Sing-Along-Storybooks available from Music Together Worldwide? Check out the variety. They make great gifts!
