Parent Topics: Observations of Musical Development

Tonal Development: What We Notice First

In the early stages of tonal development, children often begin by briefly intoning a single pitch — usually the resting tone or the dominant of the music they're hearing. It could be a recording or a song we're singing in class or one you're singing at home.

Next, they will begin purposefully to intone more than one pitch, following the general contour (ups and downs) of the melody though not yet matching the pitches precisely. Here's an example: Can you hear Frere Jacques?

As development continues, their singing will begin to match some sections of a song more accurately — usually the beginnings and endings of songs. The process is complete when a child can sing an entire song in tune.
